2013 Windless Kite Festival
2013 Windless Kite Festival
At the Long Beach Elementary School in Long Beach, Wa the 12th Annual Windless Kite Festival, January 18, 19, and 20 2013 will have something new. Friday the 18th gym opens at 4pm. Bring a flat kite or two to color the walls with. Friday is all about setting up and some free flying time. Saturday morning the gym will open at 8am for more free flying time. At 11:00 we will have the 1st ever Open Individual Indoor Singleline competition! Judged with the same score sheet, rules, and format as the Unlimited event. An indoor competition just for the single line kites. Then more free flying time. We'll have plenty of opportunity to let people try this indoor flying out. We love to help people get started with a quick lesson. At 2:00 we will have the main event. The AKA Open Individual Indoor Unlimited competition. Last year we had 22 competitors, and we expect a great showing again this year! Then more free flying time until 5:00 when we head to the Kite Museum for the Italian Potluck Dinner. There will be awards and a bag raffle. Bring that special raffle item, the funds raised go toward supporting the Museum. You will also get to meet and hear from the new museum executive director, Chelsea Libby. Sunday the gym will open up at 8:00 for more free flying time. At 11:00 will be the Indoor Hot Trick Shoot-out, immediately followed with some demos and the grand finale. After all that you'll get even more free flying time! Registration for the competition is $15 on site only.

Re: 2013 Windless Kite Festival
Thank you Scotty for sending this information out. Marla & I have attended this event for many years and plan on being there again. It is one of the best winter events going on. We come to support the event and see flyers in the winter time that we don't see on the beach that time of the year. Oh yah! We come to see Kay Buesing at the WKM also.

So...what was hot and what was not? I'm interested in zero wind indoors kiting/gliding. What kites didn't quite live up to expectations?

Re: 2013 Windless Kite Festival
Take a look at all of the videos from the Milton Indoor kite festival a couple of weeks ago on youtube. Lots of great video, showing many different indoor kites. (Milton is in Washington state.) If you wonder what each of the kites were, let me know. If I don't know, I can find out.

Re: 2013 Windless Kite Festival
John, it is obvious that you do not play at your duties of an AKA officer :} The organization is fortunate to have you.
What I am jonesin' around for is the clear evidence that a mere mortal can horse a Prism 4D into the still and windless envrionment of an indoor kite event without wires, cranes and a zeppelin. That is a person I want to communicate with. I've been spanked, humbled and have polished the floor with my back pockets trying to sustain flight with the afore mentioned kite. Captain Aether stands at the ready to take flight lessons from an experienced indoor 4D pilot. Substitute kites will not do. I've already seen how elegantly they can be flown. I've seen the pilots move with ease and grace. It is the 4D that tasks me Arrgh!

Re: 2013 Windless Kite Festival
We've got a good team in tough times, we all do what we can - but kites and people are first.
Looking forward to meeting you at Kite Party!
Wind is often light or non-existent there before 10am, may be a good chance to pick some brains on your 4-D.
