BRIDGE FLYING
Have any of you fellow kite enthusiasts ever flown your kite from the top of a tall bridge or downtown building? I have considered the extra height, obviously producing stronger winds and thus alot more stress on the line and the kite itself. I have planned to counteract this with extra strong kite line and by reinforcing all joints on the kite. If anyone has any ideas to help me accomplish this exciting flight please let me know. Thanks

Re: BRIDGE FLYING
Hi Windmaster, I for one have not flown in those locations. Both those areas can be "risk" locations that go against practical safety rules. Keep in mind you don't want to injure anyone, or cause property damage . I'm sure you can find great wind's in safe locations.
Tell us more about your kiting experience and the kind of kites you fly.

Re: BRIDGE FLYING
Thank you for your concern regarding my safety as well as the safety of others Cliff. I assure you I never put innocent people at risk as I push the limits of ordinary kite flying extraordinary new heights. I am a one day going to bring kiting back to the mainstream of american culture. In order to do this I may have to get a little crazy and stir a few feelings. As far as my kiting experience, honestly I only have roughly 2 years of flying under my belt. I dont claim to be the best flyer out there but I do undoubtly love flying my kites. I make my own kites ,although I started with a butterfly kite that a nice family gave my 6 yr old son randomly at a park in Clear Lake, TX . I have been hooked ever since. Now me amd my Tight Kite Clique go randomly from place to place giving out kites and spreading our love for kiting with as many people as possible. Thanks for your reply God Bless.

Re: BRIDGE FLYING
Hi Windmaster, glad you responded. My suggestion about safety was not to discourage but to give awareness. From your post I had no idea of your age and I didn't want to encourage any youngster to do crazy things, or an adult with no experience. Also glad you joined a kite club and can share your fun. There's lots of information here at this site of great value. And the folks who come here are always willing to help, don't be shy ask questions. There's another site that is pretty active with kite building called kitebuilder.com stop by there and give a look at their forum.

Re: BRIDGE FLYING
Most building owner would not let people fly kites from their buildings... too much liability involved. You also need to consider FAA guidelines, which is usually 300' from the ground. I'm say its a safe bet that the FAA would not want a kite higher then 300' without permission regardless.
If there is wind up higher you should be able to reach that wind by flying the kite a little higher from the ground.
Kiting has left the mainstream? I don't know that it's even been in the mainstream but we certainly always need more fliers. If you have several fliers in the area then you may want to consider a fun fly on certain days in the same place. Get the word out and you may have additional people show up.

Re: BRIDGE FLYING
Thank you for your feedback Mr. Copeland. I agree we need as many new kiters as we can get in what I like to call "the movement." I feel like kiting is often looked at as dull or boring these days, thats
why I have taken this new approach to kiting. Myself and my fellow "tight kiters" try to fly our kites in the most shocking environments in order to get peoples attention. I have flown my kite in shopping malls, Houston Astro baseball games as well as the reliant center Home of the Houston Texans Football team. Other members have flown at concerts, Major league soccer games, car shows, waterparks, and just about an odd place you could think of. We always keep a quite on hand, at least a mini kite if nothing else. People seem to really get excted and often times take up kiting as a new hobby. So I challenge all you fellow kiters to go out and make some waves for the sake of kiting.

Re: BRIDGE FLYING
windmaster,
Safety first is always good advice! I have flown flow forms and sled kites off of tall building's roof tops and once flew a small sled out of the hotel window I was residing at in Brussels, Belgium. Strong line- Kevlar 200-500 # test and strong fittings and graphite rods are in order. Good luck with the tight flying!
Have flown small fighter kites in many tight places over the years, safe and simple!!
