National Kite Month 2013
National Kite Month 2013
National Kite Month in 2013 will officially start on March 30 and extend through April 30. That provides us with 5 weekends over 4-1/2 weeks. Each "week" of NKM 2013 will start on a Saturday and end on the following Friday. The final week of NKM 2013 will be a short one, from Saturday March 27 through Tuesday March 30, but for the purposes of awarding prizes it will be treated as a "week" equal to the others.
Speaking of prizes, this year will see cash awards given to registrants each week and a final prize for the entire month. The method of selecting the award recipients this year will be by chance. Each week that an event is registered on the National Kite Month calendar that event's organizer will have his/her name put in a hat, and at the end of the week one name will be drawn. A name will be put in another hat for each event registered during all of Kite Month and one name drawn for a final cash prize at the end of the month. Of course, multiple events registered by one event organizer will result in multiple chances for that organizer each week and again at the end of the month. Furthermore, if any event lasts longer than one week (such as a gallery display) the organizer will get a chance for every weekend in which it appears on the NKM calendar. Naturally, the more events registered the better the chances to collect some cash for your efforts. Check back with this posting at a later date for the exact amounts to be awarded for each week and for the whole month.
So start planning those NKM events now and register them on the National Kite Month website. Registration will open on or about February 13, 2013. And please remember to include a proper mailing address when registering. We can't send out prizes if we don't know where or to whom they should go.

Re: National Kite Month 2013
Mike,
In the past the final weekend of National Kite Month has been the first weekend of May. That gave event organizers one more weekend to work with and reduced competition for participants. Specifically in Region 3 it started with the Smithsonian (now the Blossom) Kite Festival, and ran through the Atlantic Coast Kite Festival in Virginia Beach. I don't know what body decides the dates but I request NKM be extended to May 6th for this year.

---NOTICE---
National Kite Month is just around the corner, if your thinking about doing kid's workshops, what do you do for string/winders? Think about eliminating lot's of work. The AKA General Store has the winders you need with special pricing for large orders.

NKM DATES REVISED
Due to popular demand (of Will Smoot) National Kite Month has been extended through May 5. The official dates of NKM are now March 30 to May 5. The provides NKM event organizers one more weekend to hold a registered event, and perhaps one more chance to win a cash prize in a weekly drawing.

Re: National Kite Month 2013
What do the winders look like and how much string is on them. I saw some really cute little winders that look like miniture versions of the ones that come with most kites that had about 75 feet of string on them.
We like short string since some kids will let it all out so the less thier is the less of a mess. Its good to have enough to cut off the knot and start over but not so much to tie everything on the field together.

Re: National Kite Month 2013
Hi ABOUTKITES, the kids kite string/handles can be seen in the AKA General Store page . Handles are black, about 4" wide, have 100 feet of nylon 20 pound string. I noticed you mentioned removing string from the kite .... to make that easier the prefered method is to make a 4" loop at the end and larkshead the line to the kite bridle. This eliminates the hassle of un tieing a knot or cutting the knot off. We have thousands in stock so we can handle your needs.
Make kids happy ,fly a kite with them

Re: National Kite Month 2013
I did not make it to SPI due to a missed flight In Las Vegas while attending KTAI. I have had a chance to look them over and they work great with just the right amount of string.
