First time - 3 day kite festival in Romania

Hi everyone,

My name is Corina and am writing to you from Bucharest, Romania. I am building the kiters community here. I started this process last year in May and am proud to say I have gathered nice people around me and it's a real joy to discover passionate kiters.

I have a big challenge now: organize a 3 day kite festival on the beach. The resort we are planning to go is popular for children summer camps and family with children vacations. I was thinking to have mega bols and funky flying creatures (octopus, sharks, butterflies etc), one liners in general...My questions are:

1. What other kites do you suggest I bring?
2. How do you keep them in the air for 3 days? How do you keep a Mega Bol under control for such a long period of time?
3. What activities should I plan for the 3 days having into consideration the main audience will be children and parents/school or kidnergarden teachers?

Hi Corina! Welcome to the kite community. You might want to connect with the Seagull Kite Club in Turkey. They're not that far from you (compared to America!), and they have many members who have run festivals before. Also, on this website, go the Resources tab, and under Publications you can download the Kite Event Organizer's Manual.

It's difficult to pick out one or two kites and say that they'll be good for a 3 day festival. You have to expect the weather to change, so the kites will have to change too. But in general, you want a lot of color -- banners, ground pieces -- to welcome your guests, and then one or two nice kites to be the centerpieces of the event.

Good luck, and send pictures of your event to kiting.ed@aka.kite.org to be included in the magazine.

You don't try to keep them in the air for three days. The big kites (and Bols) need someone who understands big kites watching over them, and close to them, all the time they are in the air. At night, they have to come down and be packed away, at least temporarily. Next morning (wind permitting) they can go back into the sky.

Hi!

Thank you all for your messages, they are of great help!

I didn't get around to organizing the kite festival this year...lots of bureaucracy involved for the beach..but I learnt some important lessons and now I can better plan for next summer and find reliable partners.
