Low Cost KAP Rig (2011 Convention KAP Workshop Project)
Low Cost KAP Rig (2011 Convention KAP Workshop Project)
At the 2011 AKA Convention in Wildwood, I presented a workshop on building a simple KAP rig. The rig, built from a CD, carabiners, some line and zip ties, fixes the camera in a downward orientation. This rig is suitable for a Canon point and shoot camera running CHDK, a GoPro Hero camera or any other camera with a built-in intervalometer function.
During the workshop I talked attendees through building their rigs from a simple kit. But our project wasn't complete without instructions on setting up the camera with CHDK and tips on using this rig. I'm still working on the final document that includes all of these instructions. When complete I will post the doc in this discussion.
Thanks to everyone who attended the workshop and I hope you get some interesting photos from your new KAP rigs.

Re: Low Cost KAP Rig (2011 Convention KAP Workshop Project)
I had to smile when I saw the title of this post. I was very impressed with the presentation and the simplicity of the build when I attended this workshop at the convention. that being said I completed the kit and upon returning home ordered the Go Pro camera. the smile came from the fact that I built an simple rig and then killed off the low cost by buying an expensive camera. I have another rig that I have not used as much as I planned but this one being more protected can be used more often.
As a side note REI, the wilderness equipment co offers the camera to members with a 20% discount. It did not reflect the discount when I attempted to order online and after contacting them I was able to place the order by phone. Joining also give you a rebate at the end of the year and if you live near a store you can pick it up and avoid shipping charges.

How would one be able to obtain building info on this low cost rig. Unable to attend the convention for many reasons....

Re: Low Cost KAP Rig (2011 Convention KAP Workshop Project)
The mountig system for the camera was quite simple and easy to build. Its basically a cd with holes drilled in it for zip ties to attach the camera and rings to attach the line to hang it from your kite. The main part you need is a camera. The $200-300 Go Pro Hero has a built in timer to snap a picture every so often and the old cannon cameras can be setup to do it internally. Before you worry about the simple mount you need the camera. Ebay is one option. Check out the articles for the models that the program mentioned in the above post work with.
You download the program and put it on the camera's memory card. When you turn the camera on it loads the program to make it an automatic timer camera. When you turn it off and put a regular card in its back to normal.
The mount holds the camera flat so that it takes photos straight down. Other rigs have it tilt and take pictures from a different perspective. By the time you locate a camera Dave plans to have the instructions posted online. Im sure he can also send you a copy of drop me a line when your ready to build it.

Re: Low Cost KAP Rig (2011 Convention KAP Workshop Project)
I have a CANON camera. And I have the software on a card that lets it take pictures at chosen interval. However when I turn on the camera I have to go to a menu to put it into the serial picture taking mode.
I can't do that in the outdoors as the light washes out the view screen and I can't see the menu. Also with the view screen against the CD would make it even HARDER to read the menu.

Dave-
Did you ever put the instructions for the KAP rig from the conference workshop on line? I can't seem to locate them.
Thanks

Re: Low Cost KAP Rig (2011 Convention KAP Workshop Project)
We have a set of instructions from the workshop and pictures of the build. If you write directly to about-kites@earthlink.net I can send you a photo of my rig. Its basically a cd with four small rings attached equally spaced on the outside edge. You camera mount will depend on the camera but basicall a short bolt thru the near center of the cd. The only difficult part is the suspension system and its explained on the KAP site.
The suspension line clips on to your flying line at two points and the cd is suspended by the four cords allowing it to self level as the angle of the flying line changes.
The only thing left is to set the camera up to automatically snap a photo on a timed interval.
