New Brighton Kite Day 2012
New Brighton Kite Day 2012
While most of you in the Northern Hemisphere are in the depths of winter, here in New Zealand it is, allegedly, high summer. The weather hasn't exactly been in keeping with that, but Saturday January 28 had almost perfect conditions for the only annual kite fly in my city, Christchurch. It was the New Brighton Kite Day, and thanks to the efforts of a lot of people, including Craig Hansen of the Peter Lynn factory and Julie Adams, the organiser, we had a great time. Naturally Craig's big PL kites stole the limelight, but there were many other interesting smaller kites on view.
Anyone who is interested and has a couple of minutes to spare can look at the short video that I made, or have a look at a page of photos on my web-site. We hope next year to attract even more participants, so if anyone is planning a holiday trip down this way, aim to be in Christchurch at the end of January 2013.

Re: New Brighton Kite Day 2012
Hi Jim, thanks for the pictures,, looks like a great turnout . You've got a nice collection of "stuff"looks good in the sky. I noticed a red multi cellular kite being flown by Perrin Melchior, I thought he was mostly a buggy kiter ,did he make this kite or is it a commercial one?

Did you all spot the seahorse in Jim's video which appears to be shaking its head at something? "No, no, no!"...

Hello Jim,
Your pictures and video are very nice. An added bonus is the beautiful music. You will have to visit us in Minnesota sometime in the winter, I was out the other day on a frozen lake and it was 25 degrees and fabulous. The sky is always a beautiful blue no matter the temp...right? David McKeen

Re: New Brighton Kite Day 2012
Cliff,
Yes, it's Perrin's own kite. He seems to be branching out and has a nice delta fishing kite as well. I think the cellular kites are very interesting, but I hear the prices are a little high. His website is http://www.kiteworks.co.nz/
Linda,
The seahorse was very popular - it's 15ft long, and really stood out among all the other flying objects. It never stops moving its head. I had to buy it from Passion Kites in Singapore, as I could not find it anywhere else.
David,
Thanks for your comments. I have flown on a beach covered in snow, but the temperature was not as low as yours there. I like the idea of the always-blue sky and as long as the ice is thick enough to be safe, I'd like to give that a go sometime!
