Comparing Box Kites
Comparing Box Kites
Im a student from Guadalajara, México. Im current studying Computation
engineer and doing a research in kites to simulate the interaction
between a box kite and wind and see if an automatic and artificial
controller could be feasible in the try to let the kite stable in one
point on the air to capture video...
So we decided to use box kites, but i have seen a lot of box kites, so
i need help understand which one is better for my research:
Im between :
Clasic box kite
winged box kite (little wings, not delta)
winged triangular box kite (dihedral wings, not so little but not
delta)
Delta Triangular conyne
Double winged triangular conyne (Military french kite)
So, if any of you have tried any of these kites, please let me know
what do you think in aspects like:
Stability
Lift
Wind rate
anything else will be appreciated!
Thanks a lot for reading and reply!!!
Saludos from Guadalajara!!

Re: Comparing Box Kites
I am a completely non-technical person, but I do fly a lot of kites. From those you mention, the delta conyne is the only one I would attempt to use for photography - better still, a double delta conyne such as the one designed by AKA president Barbara Meyer (photo attached with camera on board). The DDC flies quite stably, has good lifting ability, and is usable in a wide range of wind speeds, certainly up to 18mph or so. Ordinary box kites tend to move around too much.
Video is quite another matter and requires a lot more stability. I suggest you check the best source of information to do with photography from a kite: http://arch.ced.berkeley.edu/kap/discuss/ Some of the guys on that forum are real experts.

Re: Comparing Box Kites
Hi Jimmy
First that all, thank you for reply and sorry for my bad english
I see... I have a question, in a standar DDC which could be the minimal wind speed for lift it with, for exaple, 5.5 pound of load. Here in Guadalajara there is only a little breeze in normal days so i need something light, besides i hope to develop a roboust controller capable to counterac the crazies winds...
Im feeling attracted to this conyne kite in the picture
Could any of you tell me your experience with this kite?
i havent decided the control mechanism but i think that i have space and spars to install there the mechanism. I hope that this box kite has lifting and a reasonable stability.
Thanks for the ideas and tips, i really need them, keep repling!

Re: Comparing Box Kites
The kite in the photo is what I know as a French military - G-Kites make one, and maybe others do as well. I haven't found it to be particularly stable.
The important point, however, that 5.5 pounds is an enormous weight to try to lift, unless you have an equally enormous kite. Go to the KAP site I suggested, and you will find many, many threads discussing almost anything you want to know about lifting a camera and which kites and equipment to use. You can also ask a question there and be sure to get helpful answers, even if only to tell you what you want is impossible! As I said, many of those guys are experts- some do it professionally and others are extremely enthusiastic amateurs. If they don't know the answers, probably no-one does.

Re: Comparing Box Kites
For an excellent article about the behavior of box kites, check out the Kiting archives. Look in Volume 10, issue 1.
Even if you aren't an AKA member, you can access it. The board just voted to open issues older than 5 years to everyone.
Enjoy!
