[Fort Collins] The skies of Fort Collins will come alive with kites of all shapes, sizes, and colors when the third annual Kites In The Park Kite Festival gets underway! What better way to celebrate wind power, the outdoors, and spending time with the family than by coloring the sky together with beautiful kites at this free community event. Kites In The Park will feature top flyers, specialty kites, a kids kite-making station, competitions & prizes, kites to purchase, concessions, and more!

This event is free thanks to all the volunteers and sponsors. There will be several raffles, contests, and giveaways. We will have several hundred kite kits for the kids to make and decorate and of course to fly.

There will be sport kite lessons and general kite flying lessons. Bring your kites and have a blast. There will also be a Kite Doctor there to help you with those minor ills your kite might have.

There will be demonstrations and many big kites.

Lan Su brings a kite exhibit from three treasured sources: the Drachen Foundation, the Bob & Charlene Umbowers collection, and the Smithsonian. New this year is a display of kites so small that some could fit into matchboxes. Amazingly, all can fly! Back again are glorious large kites in shapes of butterflies, dragons, peacocks, hawks, sparrows, and a special whistling kite. The common Chinese word for kite is fengzhen, which translates to “wind zither” describing a Chinese love of noise-making kites.

Kite making and coloring, Chinese story time, lectures about kite history, and a scavenger activity will keep individuals and families flurrying through the Garden like kite tails. As an urban setting is not the best place for kite flying, Flying Ribbon Dancers will entertain and encourage all to fly kites at the beach or the park.
