[Austin] Texans celebrate the spring by flying every kind of kite imaginable and we’re doing it on March 7, 2004. The Zilker Park Kite Festival is a 76 year young single line competition. There is no admission or registration charge. The 2003 festival drew well over 10,000 participants. Everyone is welcome whether they fly their kite or just to see the hundreds of kites in the air. Categories include largest, smallest, highest angle, steadiest, most unusual and strongest pulling. All ages are eligible to compete in categories for youth and adults. Handsome trophies are awarded to first, second and third place winners. The Oldest and youngest competitors win trophies too. All kites entered must be home made. Proceeds from vendors sales go to help local kids in crisis. Come on down and enjoy an event that is uniquely "Austintatious". While you are here, enjoy the SXSW music festival and other spectacular spring happenings in the area.

Kite-flying has been a popular Thai sport for centuries. Thai kites are classified as being "flat" or 3-dimensional. The more elaborate kites such as those taking on the more complex forms of birds or humans are usually 3-dimensional. At the 8th Thailand International Kites Festival organized by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the unique identity of Thai kites is showcased. Ordinary Thai kites come in all shapes and sizes with the popular ones featuring owls, fishes, various faces and serpents and ranging from inches up to 25 feet in size. These kites are usually flown for fun. Kite-flying has become a popular sport worldwide with modern-day and stunt kites adding to the colour and diversity of the 8th Thailand International Kites Festival. The modern-day kites come in different shapes and forms and are made from modern materials, often featuring the latest technology. They have much larger frames and are impressive. These new developments have also led to a variety of kite-flying styles.
