[washington (District of Columbia] Volunteers from Friends of the Soldiers' Home (https://www.afrh.gov/afrh/wash/washcampus.htm in Petworth, Washington, DC are hosting an Octoberfest on the grounds of the Home on Sunday, 7 October (First Sunday) and would like to add kite flying to the event.
This is the first year for the event, and they are expecting a good crowd of
people. There will be music and food, dancers, a storyteller, family fun
activities, a volksmarch, and an art bazaar. The organization has already
successfully hosted a Fourth of July event, which yielded 2000 in
attendance, and, like the Fourth, they intend to make this a yearly event.
They think that kite flying would not only add to the draw for the event but
would also be of interest to the veterans and wounded warriors who use the
Petworth facility.
The official event time is 1:00 – 5:00 p.m., but arrangements for the kiters
to arrive much earlier to set up are currently approved at 9:00 am. Lunch
will be provided (IF you register in advance of the event ONLY!)
If you are interested in being part of the group, please contact Paul
LaMasters (301-972-9289; before Sunday, 30
September 2012. Paul must provide a head count to the organizers. More
details will be provided to all who sign up as they become available.
We're flying on about 40 acres of area, which also is home to a golf-ball
driving range (that should certainly be entertaining until someone is
injured!) The sponsors are roping off a field approximately 200 or 300 feet
on each side for our exclusive usage. There will be a drop-off area for
unloading, depending on the number’s of WOW volunteers we may get to park
next to the site as well.
There’s a need for kite-building with young adults and accommodations have
been arranged.

[Roanoke] For those of you familiar with the Blue Ridge Kite Festival, one of the local TV stations in the Roanoke/Salem and southwest VA area WDBJ7 is offering a unique opportunity for our club Got Wind? and the AKA in general to get the word out about our love of kiting.
They are having their first annual WeatherFest on Friday and Saturday October 19th and 20th. On Friday it will consist of local schools and clubs (Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, etc) coming to visit the exhibit and learn how weather affects our sport and many others. As of today the total number of children slated to attend stands at 2100+. Part of our plan is to pass along information about the Kites in the Classroom program, kite making and kite flying.
This event is not limited to sports but storm tracking, weather reporting, disaster relief, etc. At this time there are 18 other participating exhibitors including Got Wind?. This is our time to shine and show what the AKA and kiting is all about. On Saturday the event will be open free to the public for everyone to come visit all of the exhibits. Presentations, instruction, demonstrations and one on one visitation with kids and adults alike will take place both days.
We are excited that WDBJ7 contacted us to participate in this event. We are looking forward to sharing our passion for kites with everyone, however we are concerned that being such a small club we may not be able to handle this alone. We would be thrilled to have anyone who would like to come out and assist show up either day. If you are unable to attend any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Please contact Donald Jacobs (Got Wind? kite club)at donaldrke@gmail.com or Will Smoot. Please include WeatherFest in your subject line.

So, bring a kite to Trinity Church, 9600 St. Joe Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46835 (map) between noon and 4 p.m. EDT and enjoy some kite fellowship.
This is a very informal fun fly. No kite-building workshop or anything like that. Just some friends (old and new) putting some kites in the air in the name of world peace.
Please help spread the word to other kite fliers.
