GLOBE, a science program, has recognized the young scientists in pre-k who are observing their environment. The use of the word kite has allowed the students to increase their vocabulary and study of phonemes and the syntax of the English language. Learning to write sentences is a higher order thinking skill for pre-k students. Songs about kites increase their vocabulary. The science of flying and the wind that is included in the defintion of weather or kind of weather becomes and exciting concept to students. The kite itself is a logo on our walls. The illustration of a kite allows them to apply their knowledge of geometry and manipulative skills that are used in writing and art. Most important the kite allows children to explore their imagination and to compare and contrast their use of magical kites.
[Westport] This is an informal group that gets together on a Wednesday evening at 5:00pm to sunset.

[Virginia Beach & Portsmouth ] Last year we had awesome winds and kites painted the skies. Wow kite flyers it’s almost time for the 8th Atlantic Coast Kite Festival again this year in Virginia Beach and Portsmouth, VA. We open the kite festival with a get together at the Portsmouth Art and Cultural Center with live music, drinks and food not just for the kite festival attendees but open to the public. From there we work our way into fun for the whole weekend including a party Saturday night. This year, we again have a limited amount of hotel rooms for kite fliers and volunteers. Almost all meals are provided for flyers during the festivals and festivities Friday and Saturday nights. We also offer gas money to some coming in from far away (email for details). So, pack a car full of fliers, kites, volunteers and enthusiasts and join us.
