The Keystone Kiters are an active AKA affiliated club based in south central Pennsylvania and have been named the AKA Kite Club of the Year for 2011. Members meet regularly to fly kites, learn new skills and techniques, and educate the public on kites and kite safety. Our members enjoy all aspects of kites and kite flying. Many of our members are well known kite makers and artists. Others are involved in dual and quad lined sport kites. Visitors are always welcome!
We normally hold two retreats each year – one in the summer and one in the winter. In August 2011 we had Simon Crafts come to teach us the Gizmo kite. We had several of these kites flying at the AKA convention in Wildwood – They looked great! Little did we know that Simon would go on to win the 2011 AKA Grand National Championship!
In October we hosted a kite picnic and fly that turned out to be quite an international event! We had guests from the following countries: Malaysia, Indonesia, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Jordan, Australia, Germany, Chili, Turkey and the Czech Republic. This was in addition to many local members (and some who drove a couple hours to attend!)
This winter, one of those international guests, Abu Ismail of the Johar Kite Association in Malaysia, will be teaching our retreat. The kite will be a 4foot traditional paper Wau Bulan. This looks like it will be a great project!
