Sunrise Kites (more)
I have been flying kites for many years. It is my birthday tommorrow and that means it was about 52 years ago that my Dad took me out kite flying! The kite was a little Hi Flyer diamond paper kite we bought for a quarter. It lasted about 15 minutes till the paper sail was ripped up. When we returned home Dad showed me how to replace the paper sail with one made from a sheet of news paper. Over the summer I must have replaced that paper sail about 15 times! But it was just so fun to fly.
Soon as a 10yr old that was encouraged to build things, I had plans for a big new kite that would not tear. I obtained 2-  1/2" conduit pipes and made a 10' diamond kite with a tarp my Dad had for a sail. We "borrowed" the line from Mom's cloths line out back and headed to the park. We had tons of fun with that kite because it was such a challenge to fly.  When we got enough wind to lift that heavy kite, it was pulling so hard it would take several of us kids to hold it back. We gennerally went home with lots of grass stains on our back sides from sliding accross the grass!  We never thought to anchor the darn thing down!
I have enjoyed flying kites, making kites, giving kites away, and selling kites for many years since. What a great thing my Dad taught me all those years ago.
